Armed thieves steal hundreds of thousands from Pa. security guards in brazen daylight heist

Armed thieves stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from the van of Pennsylvania security guards collecting money from video game machines in a brazen daylight heist, authorities said Tuesday.

The incident occurred Monday around 1 p.m. outside the Spot Laundromat at Southgate Mall in Chambersburg, local police said. Three armed suspects wearing masks and hoods pulled up alongside the security guards, after which one of the suspects hit one of the guards on the head and took their gun.

The suspects then held the guards at gunpoint while stealing cases filled with cash before escaping in a white Ford van with Pennsylvania license plates.

Police said discarded cases were found on the roadways the suspects used to flee.

Chambersburg Police Lt. Matt Bietsch declined to say how much money was stolen, though WGAL, citing a state police memo, reported the amount was around $400,000.

Police believe the suspects may have driven to a different county or crossed into Maryland and are asking the public to come forward with any information that could identify them.

According to the Franklin County Free Press, police believe multiple persons of interest connected to a home robbery earlier this year could also be connected to Monday’s heist.
