6 hospitalized after stabbing, shooting at Salt Lake City funeral home

A total of six people were hospitalized following a funeral in Salt Lake City, Utah, where three people were stabbed and one person suffered a gunshot wound Tuesday, according to local police.

It’s unclear how the other two people, who are believed to be suspects, were injured in the violence.

Witnesses saw a car speeding away from the Neil O’Donnell Funeral Home where the chaos occurred around 1:30 p.m. local time. Police tracked down the vehicle and found three people and a firearm inside.

Two people in the car were treated for minor injuries at an area hospital, while the third person was detained for questioning.

Police said they’re referring to the others hospitalized as “patients” unless new information becomes available. The individual shot was in critical condition as of Tuesday afternoon.

Salt Lake City Police Communications Director Brent Weisberg said the people involved in the incident were “at the funeral home when this all occurred,” though their exact relationship was not immediately known. Weisberg couldn’t speak to the age or gender of anyone involved in the fracas.

Authorities searched downtown Salt Lake City for security video from local businesses near where the violence occurred. They’re also asking witnesses to come forward with whatever information they may have.

The incident is not believed to represent an ongoing threat to the community.
