Brother of Michigan Rep. Dan Kildee fatally shot by son

The brother of Michigan congressman Dan Kildee was fatally shot during a Tuesday morning confrontation with his 27-year-old son, who was then injured in a serious car crash, according to authorities.

Tim Kildee, 57, was reportedly killed in his home north of Flint, Mich., following a “yelling match” with the suspect. Another family member heard the victim being ordered to surrender his keys and wallet before a gunshot rang out.

The alleged killer is accused of then stealing his father’s car, which he ran into a truck at a high rate of speed, police said. He’s been hospitalized under police supervision.

Two people in the truck he hit suffered minor injuries. Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson told reporters the collision was not the result of a police pursuit.

The victim and his ex-wife had been looking for their son, who was involved an earlier domestic dispute elsewhere, police said. The nature of the original incident, which happened around 3 a.m., is unclear.

Authorities said the suspect could be charged with murder, carjacking and firearm-related offenses.

Tim Kildee, who was in Washington, D.C. at the time of Tuesday’s shooting, asked for privacy following his brother’s death.

“Our family is grieving and heartbroken,” the Democratic congressman said in a statement. “There are no words to describe the loss of a beloved brother and family member, especially in such a terrible tragedy.”

Tim and Dan’s uncle Dale Kildee was a Flint-area congressman for 36 years before retiring in 2012 and being succeeded by his nephew.
