Robinho arrested after being sentenced to nine years in jail for rape

Former Manchester City footballer Robinho has been arrested at his home in Brazil after a judge ruled he should spend nine years in prison for rape. In November 2017, the 40-year-old was found guilty of his involvement in a gang rape in Italy but has continued to live in Brazil despite his conviction by an Italian court.

An international arrest warrant was filed by the Italian authorities but Robinho continued to live as a free man in his homeland. That has now changed after Brazil’s Superior Court of Justice (BSCJ) decided to review Italy’s request.

Nine of the 15 ministers voted in favour of Robinho serving his sentence in his home country. The former winger, who at the height of his career played for Real Madrid and Brazil, was arrested by the Federal Police in the state of Sao Paulo on Thursday.

He is expected to have a custody hearing on Friday evening, with the judgement in his case published on Wednesday. Robinho has made several unsuccessful attempts to appeal the conviction over the years and continues to insist his innocence.
