NATO country forced to scramble fighter jets after Russia's devastating missile strikes

A NATO country was forced to scramble fighter jets after Russia carried out yet another massive attack on western Ukraine.

Tensions continue to run high in eastern Europe as Poland announced in the early hours of March 29 that “Polish and allied aircraft have been activated” following the intense Russian military activity overnight.

In a brief message shared on social media platform X, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said: “We would like to inform you that tonight there is intense activity of long-range aviation of the Russian Federation, related to missile strikes of Tu-95, Tu-22 and MIG-31 aircraft carried out against objects located in the territory of Ukraine.

“All necessary procedures to ensure the safety of Polish airspace have been launched, and DORSZ [the Polish Operational Command of the Branches of the Armed Forces] is monitoring the situation on an ongoing basis.

“We warn that Polish and allied aircraft have been activated, which may result in increased noise levels, especially in the south-eastern part of the country.”

Further raising tensions, authorities in Moldova said three explosions were heard near its border with Ukraine, in the Novodnestrovsk region.

The Moldovan border force said in a statement: “Regarding the information that Russian missiles would have flown over the airspace of the Republic of Moldova last night, we would like to mention that all airspace surveillance and monitoring systems did not detect any unauthorised entry, an aspect also confirmed by the Ukrainian authorities.”

This comes just five days after a Russian cruise missile reportedly entered Polish airspace for approximately 39 seconds during another major missile and drone attack on Ukraine.

A similar incident happened in late December. At the time, the Polish Foreign Ministry decided to summon Russian charge d’affaires Andrei Ordash to hand him a note demanding an explanation and “an immediate cessation of such activities”, according to Warsaw.

Speaking about the overnight attacks, the Ukrainian Air Force said Russia had launched multiple waves of strikes, with explosions reported in several cities.

The force said to have destroyed 58 drones launched by Russian forces as well as 26 cruise missiles.
