British tourists hit by urgent Euros warning over 'super strong beer'

The UK’s Foreign Office has issued a warning to British tourists intending to travel to Germany for this year’s Euro 2024 football tournament.

Under their guidance concerning the tournament, which starts on June 14, they advise: “Beer can be stronger than in the UK, so drink responsibly, know your limits and respect local laws.

“You may not be let into the stadium if you drink too much.”

This is one of a series of matters covered by the Government about Britons travelling to the country for the Euros which were last hosted by the UK in 2021.

The warning has been issued as German beer can be much stronger than similar drinks served in the UK’s bars and pubs.

According to the charity Drinkaware, beers in Germany can average between 4.7 percent and 5.4 percent. In comparison, the average strength of a similar beverage in the UK is around 4.4 percent.

Hundreds of thousands of Britons are due to flock to Germany to cheer on the Three Lions this summer across 10 German cities.

Ahead of the mass migration of English and Scottish football fans to Germany, warnings have been issued by fan associations about the importance of moderation. However, not everyone agrees with the Foreign Office’s decision to highlight the matter.

Speaking to the BBC, co-founder of the Scottish Football Supporters Association, Paul Goodwin, said that Scottish fans have a long history of enjoying drinks in other countries sensibly.

He explained: “There are of course many things that Scotland fans need to be warned about but we don’t really think this is one of them.

“The Tartan Army have watched Scotland all over the world and enjoyed sampling the culture and, of course, the local beer sensibly and in moderation – win, lose or draw.”

England’s campaign in the tournament starts with a match against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen while Scotland kicks off two days earlier with a game against hosts Germany in Munich.
