Zelensky accused of trying to 'cleanse opposition' as Ukraine splits over Russia war

Solomiia Bobrovska, MP for the Voice Party in Ukraine, told French outlet Le Monde: “I see these bans as an attempt to silence us in order to keep parliament out of key decisions.

“The government cannot tell parliament, which is a separate independent institution, what it should do; that’s totally unconstitutional.”

The anger comes as Zelensky considers mobilising more soldiers to join the fighting on the frontline.

A bill that would see 500,000 conscripts brought in to help is being debated in Ukraine’s parliament.

Ukraine mobilised men over the age of 27 when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of the country on February 24, 2022.

However, just a third of its million men and women were put on active duty.

Zelensky is yet to be convinced by the plan, saying that he told his generals to provide more evidence that it would be worth it.

He said: “This is a significant number. I told them I need more arguments to support this direction because this is a matter of people first and foremost.”

Zelensky dismissed his previous military commander, Valery Zaluzhny after he demanded 500,000 more conscripts.
