UK snow forecast: New maps show cold peak striking Britain in days – with snow in tow

Weather forecasters have warned that a Scandinavian chill will descend on the UK in the next few days as weather maps capture what appears to be an encroaching mass of cold air.

Dramatic new charts show high atmospheric changes occurring above the country over the next few days.

Temperature anomaly maps show -50C lows 5.5km (3.4 miles) upwards by the coming weekend and pockets of snow into the weekend.

Meteorologists forecasting the next week have said Britons should anticipate an unsettled few days ahead.

They have warned the interaction between high and low pressure in the atmosphere could cause a mess of conditions, including potential torrential downpours.

Anomaly maps from WXCharts show temperatures dropping by Saturday, March 9, with growing atmospheric pressure.

By the following day, March 10, the pressure will build above Scotland and roll off Norway, drafting off the country’s west coast and towards the UK.

Charts from Netweather show that light snow, around 1cm per hour, could fall that same day, primarily over the north, while southerners see rain.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, independent weather forecaster Phil Morrish said Scandinavian high pressure would likely come to dominate after the coming weekend.

He said: “The next few days will be mostly dry for most of us, but between Thursday and Saturday heavy showers with some torrential downpours are likely.

“The low moves south on Sunday, then we are left with The High over Scandinavia trying to bring us cooler weather against the mild Atlantic low pressure, which is trying to move in with more damp mild weather.

“At this stage, it looks like the Scandinavian High will prevail, bringing us cooler weather.”

Mr Morrish offered a caveat, stating the air likely wouldn’t drive temperatures too far down and that any coming snow would fall almost exclusively on high ground.

He said: “The air is not that cold, so next week’s temperatures look like they’ll be in the 6C to 9C range, which is fairly typical for March.

“Any snow looks like being confined to land above 300m once again. Any settling snow will be above 350m or 1200ft, so most of us won’t see any as the air is not that cold anywhere over Europe at the time.”
