Top bedroom houseplants 'really good' at cleaning your room for a better sleep

It turns out that you can be dreaming a lot faster and easier if you put some plants in your bedroom. Not only can they clean your air but they can help you sleep better.

David Domoney, Everest ambassador, and horticulturist claims that having houseplants can also help you to live longer.

Most plants release moisture into the air in a process called transpiraton and some houseplants have adapted to conserve water by minimising transpiration and can reduce humidity levels in their immediate vicinity, which in turn will help to reduce condensation on your windows.

Condensation and moisture on windows and walls are not only unsightly, it encourages the growth of mould, so keeping on top of condensation to avoid mould is important, reported the Mirror.

Gardening pro David said: “It is well known that many plants can help improve indoor air quality.

“They absorb pollutants through their leaves, roots, and with microorganisms in the soil filter out harmful compounds which build up in our homes and release clean oxygen.

“This natural process helps reduce levels of carbon dioxide, increase humidity, and eliminate significant amounts of airborne pollutants, thereby improving the overall air quality within indoor environments.

“Plants contribute to indoor air quality improvement through a few of their natural processes.”

David, who often appears on This Morning, believes that having plants around can make us feel less stressed, happier, and help us focus and work better by making our surroundings feel more natural and calming. He’s picked out the top 10 plants he thinks are best for your bedroom, and they can be purchased from most garden centres, including Gardening Naturally or YouGarden.com.

Florist Chrysanthemum

The Florist’s Chrysanthemum, or ‘mum’ plant, is “really good” at cleaning benzene from the air, which is a chemical found in stuff like glues, paints, plastics, and detergents. This plant likes light but not direct sun and needs a bit more looking after, like watering often and taking off dead flowers to help it bloom.

It doesn’t live very long inside, but it’s nice to have around for a while.

English Ivy

This plant is great at fighting air pollution. You need to cut it back now and then to keep it healthy and not too big.

Peace Lily

A peace lily is one of the top plants for cleaning the air in your house. It also helps make the air more moist, which is good for when you breathe.

It loves places with moderate to high humidity, and it’s easy to water – just keep the soil moist without overdoing it. Plus, they are happy in low-light spots and can even grow under fluorescent lights.

Lady Palm

The lady palm is great at getting rid of formaldehyde and can live happily in many indoor spaces, like offices and homes. It grows well in low light and isn’t bothered by pests, making it perfect for plant beginners.

Not only does this houseplant clean the air, but it also makes any room look better.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is famous for its healing powers and is grown for the calming acemannan gel found in its leaf. Lots of people use aloe vera gels to help with burns, bites and scrapes.

But remember, while the gel is safe, the skin of aloe vera can be harmful, especially for mums-to-be.

The plant likes lots of bright light and soil that drains well. So, put the plant on a bathroom or kitchen windowsill that gets lots of light and this plant will help to get rid of too much moisture and dampness.

Not only does the Lady Palm clean the air, but it also makes any room look better.

Weeping Fig

The weeping fig is a favourite indoor plant that helps fight off pollutants like formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene. It likes bright, indirect light and can be a bit fussy about how you look after it, not liking changes in where it is or how often it’s watered.

Snake Plant

The tough snake plant is famous for purifying the air and reducing moisture. It’s perfect for bedrooms because it soaks up water vapour at night, which helps stop condensation on windows.

Plus, it takes in carbon dioxide and gives out oxygen at night, which is good for a restful sleep.

Also known as the mother-in-law’s tongue, this plant is super easy to look after. You can forget to water it for a few weeks and it will still be fine.
