Todd Boehly plotting to 'cash in' on Chelsea star who showed true colours in Tottenham win

Todd Boehly and his Chelsea chiefs are reportedly preparing to sell Trevoh Chalobah this summer despite his impressive impact on Mauricio Pochettino’s side in recent weeks. The 24-year-old only returned to fitness in February but showed his true colours on Thursday night by taking on a clear leadership role before the win over Tottenham.

Chalobah was heavily linked with a Stamford Bridge exit last summer, and rumours of a departure from his boyhood club only intensified when he missed the first five months of this season with a thigh injury.

The centre-back’s recovery has proved to be a godsend for Pochettino as the club wade through another defensive injury crisis with Levi Colwill, Thiago Silva and Axel Disasi among those currently sidelined.

And his leadership qualities were on full display in the 2-0 win over Spurs as Chalobah, despite his tender age and peripheral squad role until two months ago, led the motivational pre-match talk in a huddle with his team-mates.

Captain Conor Gallagher and top-scorer Cole Palmer were also in the huddle but Chalobah took control himself, as he has done in other recent games, and he followed that up by dispatching a superb header in the first half before Nicolas Jackson killed the game in the second.

Although Chalobah’s stock has risen even further with a Man of the Match performance, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently claimed that Boehly and Chelsea’s sporting directors are still ‘expected’ to cash in on him this summer. The defender came through the Blues’ academy so any sale would go into the accounts as pure profit.

And a strong finish to the campaign should allow Chelsea to bank a healthy fee if all parties agree to cut ties. Chalobah joined the club’s youth setup as a schoolboy and earned his stripes on three separate loan spells before getting his shot in the first team.

The former England Under-21 international has now banked 76 senior appearances for Chelsea, but it remains to be seen whether Boehly and co give him the chance to increase that tally beyond the end of this season.

Pochettino made it clear, after defeating his former club Spurs, that he values the ’emotion’ Chalobah and his fellow academy star Gallagher bring to the team.

“Trevoh Chalobah and Conor Gallagher were fantastic,” he said. “Players that grew in this club, came through the academy system, they have the capacity in this type of game to give a little bit more because it’s emotional.”
