The beautiful little city in Spain named the best place to live for over 60s

A beautiful Spanish city hugely popular with British tourists and expats has been named one of the best places to live for pensioners.

Forbes Magazine included Malaga on its list of the best cities in the world to live after retirement.

The pretty seaside city, which was the birthplace of Picasso, has a sizeable expat community and is popular among holidaymakers – especially the over 60s.

Sat on the Costa del Sol, Malaga enjoys sunshine for around 300 days a year and an average temperature in the summer of a scorching 30C.

Property reportedly has an average buying price per square metre of €2,375 and a rented one-bed flat in the town centre being around €870pcm.

The cities public transport system has been praised, with 50 bus lines, and its many cycle tracks. It is also very flat, making it easy to travel by foot, with many areas being pedestrianised.

Malaga has lots of things to visit including fortified palace Alcazaba, the Cathedral, Museo Picasso, hiking path El Caminito del Ray, Castillo de Gibralfaro, shopping street La Calle Larios and the Roman Theatre.

There is also a number of beaches to enjoy such as Puerto Banus, Malgueta, El Palo, Raven Rock, Burriana, Monsul and Cantarrijan. According to TripAdvisor, the best beach in Malaga is the Playa de La Malagueta.

One visitor, from Lisbon, Portugal said: “One of the nicest beach in spain with lots of beach side restaurants. Safe and enjoyable, nice water and clean. Nice for day out with family. There are activites for kids as well.”

A second, from Lincolnshire, added: “Love Malagueta beach! So clean, water a bit cold this June, clean changing rooms, shower, and awesome snack and beer! Beautiful and close to city centre.”

The city has lots of award-winning spots, including bakery La Pasteleria Daza which took home ‘best cake in Spain’ and restaurant La Garganta winning ‘most committed to sustainability’.

Forbes chose Malaga by considering availability and affordability of property, culture and entertainment options, health care, safety, climate, the ability to walk or make use of public transport, and being able to get by day-to-day in English.

Also included on magazine’s list were Boquete in Panama and Hua Hin in Thailand.
