More than 440,000 holiday-themed Starbucks mugs are being recalled over concerns that handlers could be burned or cut.
Nestle USA, who manufactured the mugs, issued the recall Thursday after at least a dozen people reported burning or cutting their hands while using the cups. The injuries have included at least nine reports of severe burns or blisters.
The mugs, which were sold as gift set during the 2023 holiday season, are described as “ceramic…with metallic coating.” They were sold online and in-store at Target, Walmart and military retailer Nexcom, according to the recall notice posted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The recall includes four gift sets sold in 11- and 16-ounce sizes — the Starbucks Holiday Gift Set with 2 Mugs, Starbucks Classic Hot Cocoa and Mug, Starbucks Peppermint and Classic Hot Cocoas and Mug, and Starbucks Holiday Blend Coffee and Mug.
According to the recall notice, the mugs can overheat or break if filled with a hot enough liquid or used in the microwave, causing burns, cuts or other injuries. A warning label on the bottom of the mugs tells users not to put them in microwave.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled mugs and return them to the place of sale or directly to Nestle for a refund, no receipt required, the company said.
No other Nestle or Starbucks-branded products are involved in the recall.
“The quality, safety and integrity of Nestle USA products remain our number one priority. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this action represents to both our consumers and retail customers,” the company said
