After a sizzling stint in big league camp, Spencer Jones will get another chance to stand out when the Yankees host their inaugural Spring Breakout game against the Blue Jays.
The center fielder, ranked the Yankees’ second-best prospect by MLB.com, will play alongside 24 of the team’s other top farmhands on March 16. The game, scheduled for 4:05 p.m. at George M. Steinbrenner Field, is part of a four-day, league-wide event designed to showcase the top prospects in every organization.
Jones, 22, already had a chance to introduce himself to Yankees fans, as he slashed .467/.556/1.289 while adding six runs, seven hits, one home run and four RBI over 15 at-bats and eight games before being reassigned to minor league camp earlier this week. The home run came in Jones’ first at-bat of the spring and traveled 470 feet.
Jones, expected to begin the season at Double-A, also didn’t swing and miss before his reassignment.
Other highlights on the Yankees’ Spring Breakout roster include pitching prospects Will Warren and Chase Hampton, catcher Ben Rice, second baseman Jorbit Vivas, shortstops George Lombard Jr. and Roderick Arias, and outfielder Everson Pereira, who struggled in the majors at the end of last season.
