School canceled in Wellsville following morning ‘situation’

The Central Wellsville School district canceled classes Monday following “a situation” that occurred before the start of the school week.

“Due to a situation near the secondary school, the police have requested that we cancel school for both buildings today,” school officials posted on Facebook around 7 a.m. “All activities, transportation, and afterschool activities are canceled.”

School staff and maintenance workers were told not to report for work.

Law enforcement early said they were dealing with “an isolated incident specific to this area” and advised area residents to remain in their homes until the unspecified matter was resolved.

The Evening Tribune reported a heavy police presence Monday morning in the upstate New York town near the Pennsylvania border.  There were unconfirmed reports on social media of gunfire.

Wellsville police told the Daily News they were “still working the situation” and would provide more information when able. They posted earlier this morning on Facebook that a suspect was in custody.

Wellsville is roughly 300 miles northwest of New York City.
