Sainsbury's issues urgent warning to customers over 'do not eat' item

Sainsbury’s has issued a product recall after an item was found to be contaminated with salmonella.

The supermarket says that the bacteria has been found in one of their Sainsbury’s nut products and that customers should not eat them.

According to the Food Standards Agency (FSA) if there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, then it might be withdrawn from shop shelves or recalled.

The FSA issues Product Withdrawal Information Notices and Product Recall Information Notices to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food.

Two batches of Sainsbury’s Flaked Almonds have been affected by the latest food alert.

The packets being recalled are the 200g bags, which have batch codes 4044 and 4045 and an expiry date of February 2025.

Sainsbury’s advised customers: “If you have bought the above product do not eat it. Instead return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.

“For further information, please visit Sainsbury’s website Sainsburys.co.uk/help or contact Sainsbury’s careline on 0800 028 8303.”

Salmonella bacteria can cause food poisoning and symptoms usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.

According to the Food Standards Agency, young children, people aged over 65 and those with immune systems that are not working properly are at risk of becoming severely ill with food poisoning caused by salmonella.

The NHS website states that food poisoning “is rarely serious” and usually gets better within a week. Guidance states that you can normally treat yourself or your child at home.
