Oscars ‘In Memoriam’ doesn’t show Lance Reddick, Norman Lear, Burt Young

The Oscars remembered those who died this year, during the ceremony’s “In Memoriam” segment, but left out several TV stars and Hollywood actors from the main montage, including legendary writer-producer Norman Lear and “Rocky” actor Burt Young.

Lear, who passed away at the age of 101 in December, is remembered more for his iconic TV shows (“All in the Family,” “The Jeffersons” and “Good Times) than his film work.

But the Academy did recognize the late Matthew Perry and Andre Braugher, who were also known more for their television roles, along with musicians Tina Turner and Robbie Robertson.

Other television actors including Lance Reddick, Angus Cloud, Ron Cephas Jones and Suzanne Somers, were omitted from the main segment as well, in addition to British film director Terence Davies, and film and actor Treat Williams.

The Academy did briefly show a list with most of their names, except Cloud’s, at the end of the segment, according to Variety. But the names were only visible for a short moment and were difficult to read.

The “In Memoriam” segment opened with a clip of Alexei Navalny, the Russian political prisoner who died in February and was the subject of 2023’s Oscar-winning documentary “Navalny.”

As Andrea Boccelli and his son, Matteo, sang “Time to Say Goodbye” on the stage, the images behind them showed many faces, including Carl Weathers, who played Apollo Creed in the “Rocky” franchise and Michael Gambon who became Albus Dumbledore in the “Harry Potter” film series.

Richard Lewis from “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” Norman Jewison, Harry Belafonte, Alan Arkin, Chita Rivera, Julian Sands and Paul Reubens were some of the other stars shown during the segment.

The Academy published a much longer list of names to their Oscars.org website, but each year, some fans are angered by the Oscars leaving people out of the televised segment.
