Man Utd shoot themselves in the foot during Mason Greenwood talks with Barcelona

As an academy product, Greenwood represents 100 per cent value on the club’s financial records if they sell him and would go some way to helping land Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s top targets ahead of his first full season at Old Trafford.

But United have risked alienating one of the most likely bidders for Greenwood in Barcelona by setting their asking price so high.

He has less than 18 months left on his current contract and his value will decline the sooner that expiry date arrives, though United are thought to have an option to extend his deal for another year.

With Barcelona seemingly out of the running, United are forced to look elsewhere as they search for a suitor. Murtough and Hargreaves are thought to have met with Atletico and Real Madrid along with teams in Italy and Portugal regarding Greenwood, but there is a worrying lack of concrete interest over a player who was expected to fetch a handsome fee.
