Man gets life in prison for murder, assault of American women at Germany’s Neuschwanstein Castle

An American man has been sentenced to life for murder and rape after admitting to attacking two women, also Americans, outside a German castle.

The now-31-year-old killer met Eva Liu and Kelsey Chang, ages 21 and 22, respectively, on a hiking path near Neuschwanstein Castle in southern Germany on June 14, 2023. He lured them to a point near the Marienbruecke, a historic bridge over a gorge that offers views of the castle, where he attacked Liu.

When Chang tried to intervene, he choked her and pushed her into the ravine. She suffered a head injury but survived the 165-foot fall. The man raped Liu while she was unconscious and then pushed her into the ravine, as well.

The defendant was arrested near the scene of the crime while the women were recovered by helicopter. Liu died later from her injuries at a hospital.

The man admitted to murder and rape in a German court in February. He was identified in reports as Troy Bohling of Lincoln Park, Mich., outside Detroit.

While he’d ordinarily be eligible for release in 15 years, the judge in the sentencing noted the egregious nature of the crime, suggesting Bohling won’t get parole.
