It was Humphries who ruined Littler’s fairytale finish at Ally Pally in January, but he’s lost to his rival on four consecutive occasions since. And yet at the conclusion of their latest epic, ‘Cool Hand Luke’ showed real class as he embraced the youngster, then appeared to whisper words of praise in his ear.
And the gesture was duly lauded by darts fans, with @sportsalmanacs writing on X: “Humphries is a class act. Knew what that meant to Littler who is still learning how to deal with not always winning. Great game. Those two will be battling for a long time to come.”
@PaulEngland92 added “Fair play Humphries. Class in defeat,” while @at_harryy said “Humphries pure class.” @LichfieldWolfy praised both stars, posting: “Very mature darts from Littler. Humphries a class act as always.”
@Dayeringlaterra meanwhile, aptly summarised a contest that ebbed and flowed after Humphries had fought back from losing the first two legs to level matches: “These two really are fantastic players,” he said. “Either makes a mistake, the other pounces. That reaction from Littler was pure relief, Humphries class as always.”
Ironically, Littler has come in for criticism of late for his post-match reactions. After losing to Gerwyn Price in Glasgow back in February, he swore loudly at himself as he left the stage, venting frustration at a below-par display.
And the following week in Newcastle, he appeared to turn his back on Michael van Gerwen as the Dutchman offered him a fist bump ahead of the final leg. But in Northern Ireland the ‘Nuke’ was also full of respect, heading straight to Humphries after landing the decisive dart.
He’ll now have a reunion with MVG as he bids to make a first ever Premier League final. The former world No.1 won through to the final four by overcoming Michael Smith 6-4.
Nathan Aspinall also continued his good form by overcoming Gerwyn Price 6-5. The Englishman will face Peter Wright after ‘Snakebite’ overcame Rob Cross 6-3.
