Jersey City shooting leaves 1 dead, 2 wounded in city’s first homicide this year

An early-morning shooting in Jersey City has left one person dead and another two wounded, officials said Saturday.

The gunfire erupted near Jordan Avenue and Mercer Street, by McGinley Square, just before 7 a.m., according to a social media statement by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office. None of the victims have been identified and the conditions of those hurt were unclear.

Video of the scene, shared on social media by HudPost, shows a silver sedan stopped in the middle of the street with its rear doors open. What appears to be blood splatter is visible both on the street amidst random objects as well as on the inside the vehicle.

Authorities have so far released few other details in connection with the deadly violence. So far, no arrests have been reported and no information about the suspect or suspects have been provided.

The bloodshed Saturday morning marked the first homicide in Jersey City so far this year. As of March 3, Jersey City Police responded to four shooting incidents, in which there were five victims, all of whom survived, NorthJersey.com reported.

In 2023, there were five shooting incidents reported with a total of five victims suffering gunshot wounds, three of them fatal. The year prior, there were seven shootings with nine victims, including three reported homicides.
