Incredible motorway map shows stark contrast between UK and EU neighbours

British motorists are far worse off than their EU neighbours, with European nations boasting relatively few motorways compared to those across the English Channel. The UK boasts 56 numbered motorways that collectively span up to 2,300 miles, snaking from southern England to the tip of Scotland.

While the country’s network is extensive, it is less so than others, namely France, which has recently piqued the interest of some Britons.

Despite having just over twice the area of Britain, France has more than three times the mileage on its motorways.

And it is not the only one, as several other European nations have much larger networks.

France has, in total, 7,247 miles of motorway, primarily tolls, many of which take travellers into the country’s neighbours.

The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany have 2,193 miles, 1,095 miles and 8,077 miles each.

GB News deputy political editor Tom Harwood drew attention to the more extensive European network, decrying the UK’s comparative lack of coverage.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, he said Britain could grow its economy by adopting a souped-up planning policy.

He wrote: “Look at how little motorway the UK has compared to France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany.

“We just don’t build anything in this country anymore.

“Imagine how much bigger our economy would be if planning policy weakened the power of veto players.”

He was met with some resistance from his followers, however, some of whom were against the idea of the UK creating more roads.

One commenter said: “You’re good on housing and cost of living takes but saying the world needs more asphalt and convenience for polluting cars is so bizarre.”

Another added: “France and Germany are approximately double the size of the UK so need more roads/rail to get around.”
