Human remains including skull found in retention pond near Philadelphia

Human remains, including a skull, were found earlier this week in a water retention basin in southeastern Pennsylvania, authorities said Tuesday.

The gruesome discovery was made just before noon on Monday in Towamencin Township, some 30 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

A surveyor doing contract work in the area contacted the Towamencin Township Police Department to report what was believed to be a human skull in the retention pond.

When responding officers arrived at the scene, they found the skull and secured the area to conduct an investigation, a police spokesperson said in a statement.

The skull “appeared to be authentic,” police said.

County officials, including detectives and coroner’s office personnel, were notified and assisted with the investigation.

After searching the area around the skull, authorities also located additional skeletal remains “along with some clothing remnants,” police said.

The remains were transported to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office in Eagleville for an autopsy.

There appears to be no apparent indication of trauma or foul play, authorities said. However, the final determination of the cause and manner of death, as well as the identification of the remains, will be made by the coroner’s office, police said.

Anyone with any information on the case is urged to contact Towamencin Police at 215-368-7606.
