Hair expert shares 3 hairstyles that will make '40-year-old women look 20’

They say life gets better as you age, with your 30s being more fun than your 20s and your 40s being the new 30s.

Many people change their hair colour or clothes with time, but some avoid changing the style of their locks.

As we age, our hair changes too; it grows slower, and the hair strands become thinner. Plus, our scalp becomes drier.

Hormones also play a big role in this, as they can make hair thinner, so hair that is already dry (like curly or coiled hair) can become even drier because it’s harder for it to hold onto moisture.

Top hair stylists have shared three trendy haircuts that women over 40 can try to hide these issues and highlight their best features to look younger.

Side-parted pixie cut

While many people shy away from it, a short hairstyle is always a good idea for mature women. A pixie cut is a bold choice because it draws attention to your face and cheekbones, which “makes your face look young”, according to Jean Will hair expert and co-founder of NiaWigs Inc.

It’s also great if your hair is thinning in some areas, as the layers can be styled to cover them up.

Layers also add volume, but if you want a light, airy look, the side-parted pixie is “the perfect cut”, as explained by Jean.

The hair expert revealed that this particular style has the power to “make over 40-year-old women look like they are in their 20s”.

Layered wavy bob with wispy bangs

If you have wavy or curly hair, or want an easy-to-maintain haircut, consider a shoulder-length bob with light bangs. The layers add volume and movement while highlighting your facial features.

Jean suggested asking your hairdresser for a “bouncy, chin-length bob, with layers around the face”. She also recommended adding a fringe to cover any thinning hair or hair loss at the top of the head.

The hair guru said this layered wavy bob with soft bangs is “perfect for women over 40” as it helps them “hide their forehead [and any signs of wrinkles or natural ageing] to look younger”.

This hairstyle includes a fringe that can be worn in the middle, or to one side, depending on your face shape.

Asymmetrical bob

As women age, hair can become brittle and thin. One way to add instant volume is by cutting it asymmetrically. It’s also a great choice for those wanting to keep some length.

Gina Rivera, a famous hairstylist and founder of Phenix Salon Suites explained: “A textured asymmetrical bob creates a youthful appeal.”

Adding layers can also “remove some of the damaged ends”. This haircut “is another terrific choice for fine hair,” the stylist told She Finds.

Hair colour also changes with age, and finding grey hair is the first physical sign of ageing hair people notice. Grey hairs are caused by the slowing of melanin production in the hair follicle.

As the follicle loses the ability to produce melanin with age, hairs become more transparent – and they appear as grey or white.
