Giovinco involved in horror fall at Grand National Festival as Aintree left in standstill

Lucinda Russell’s Giovinco took a nasty fall when challenging in the latter stages of the Mildmay Novices’ Chase on Friday afternoon. The seven-year-old fell when making ground on the home straight, requiring treatment on the track.

Giovinco was widely tipped as a great each-way chance for the opener of Ladies Day at the Grand National Festival and looked set to reward the faith of punters when making up ground heading towards the last.

However, Russell’s stable star took a nasty fall at the last which prompted on-course vets to immediately rush to his aid. Screens were placed around the gelding as he received treatment, with the immense crowd at Aintree left crossing their fingers in the hope that the hugely-popular horse would recover.

A trailer filled with water then was taken over to the incident before a horse ambulance arrived and took the gelding away, with it being claimed that the vehicle headed in the direction of the Grand National course.
