‘Euphoria’ star Hunter Schafer no longer wants to play trans characters

Actress Hunter Schafer, who identifies as transgender, has revealed that she has no desire to portray trans characters.

The “Euphoria” favorite believes not making her gender identity “the centerpiece” could help further her burgeoning career.

“I worked so hard to get to where I am, past these really hard points in my transition, and now I just want to be a girl and finally move on,” she told GQ in a new cover story.

Schafer, who portrays trans character Jules Vaughn on the 9-time Emmy Award-winning HBO series, described being known just as a “trans actress” as”ultimately demeaning to me and what I want to do”.

“I’ve been offered tons of trans roles, and I just don’t want to do it,” she explained, adding: “I don’t want to talk about it.”

The 25-year-old went on to say: “I know for a fact that I’m one of the most famous trans people in media right now, and I do feel a sense of responsibility, and maybe a little bit of guilt, for not being more of a spokesperson… And I think getting further and doing awesome [work], in the interest of ‘the movement,’ will be way more helpful than talking about it all the time.”

Schafer starred alongside Zendaya, Jacob Elordi and Sydney Sweeney in Sam Levinson’s gritty HBO drama — set to return for a third season in late 2025.

Last year, she portrayed Tigris Snow in “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” and will front German director’s Tilman Singer’s forthcoming psychological thriller “Cuckoo,” which had its world premiere last month at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival.  Both roles are female characters.
