Central Connecticut State student IDed as victim of deadly weekend car crash

The victim of a car crash in Connecticut was identified Monday as a student at Central Connecticut State.

Maria Rita Da Mata, 19, died in the crash that also injured four other people Saturday night in Willington, the Hartford Courant reported. CCSU president Zulma Toro announced Da Mata’s death Monday in a letter to the campus.

“My heart goes out to Maria Rita Da Mata’s family,” Toro said. “Maria was well on her way to completing a degree in Marketing from our School of Business. The university family will keep the Da Mata family in our thoughts and prayers.”

Police said Da Mata was a passenger in a Subaru Legacy that crashed around 10 p.m. Saturday on River Road in Willington, according to the Danbury News-Times.

Investigators are unsure why the car lost control and rolled over. The driver, a 21-year-old man, and three other passengers were injured in the wreck, the Courant reported. No other vehicles were involved.

All the occupants were between 19 and 22 years old and hailed from Bethel, Conn., about 70 miles southwest of the crash site, according to the Courant. CCSU is located in New Britain, about halfway between the two cities.

Connecticut State Police are still investigating the crash. Authorities have not named the other four people in the car.
