Body found in burning car at Pennsylvania cemetery investigated as suspicious death

A person was found dead inside a burning car at a cemetery parking lot in Pennsylvania, triggering an investigation.

Lower Makefield Township Police and Yardley-Makefield Fire Department officials responded to St. Ignatius Cemetery in Bucks County for reports of a brush fire on Wednesday, Bucks County Courier Times reported. When they arrived on the scene around 11 a.m., they instead discovered a vehicle engulfed in flames toward the back of the cemetery parking lot, police said in a press release Thursday.

Once firefighters extinguished the blaze, they discovered the body of a person in the driver’s seat of the car, officials said. They managed to recover the remains, which were then taken to the local coroner’s office for examination and autopsy. It’s not clear whether the person was dead before the fire was started.

A cause of death has not yet been determined, but authorities at this time said they believe the death to be suspicious.

Investigators are also still working at this time to identify the body, but the task has proven difficult given its condition. Police said they will likely have to rely on DNA and dental records to determine the identity.

No other details were released, and an investigation into the matter is ongoing.

Police have asked that anyone with information relevant to the investigation contact the Lower Makefield Township Detective Division.
