Andy Murray retirement plans in doubt as Brit faces 'extended period' out injured

Andy Murray’s plans to retire this summer have been thrown into doubt after the Scot revealed he has ruptured his ankle ligaments. The former world No. 1 suffered the injury during his third round defeat at the Miami Open on Sunday night.

The three-time Grand Slam champion, who turns 37 in May, then pulled out of the doubles on Monday before taking to Instagram to open up on his latest injury.

He wrote: “Yesterday towards the end of my match in Miami I suffered a full rupture of my ATFL and near full thickness rupture of my CFL.

“I will see an ankle specialist when I return home to determine next steps. Goes without saying this is a tough one to take and I’ll be out for an extended period. But I’ll be back with 1 hip and no ankle ligaments when the time is right.”

Sources close to Murray said last night he still hopes to be fit for Wimbledon which could be the final event of his career.

But the extent of the damage to his Anterior Talo-Fibular Ligament (ATFL) and CalcaneoFibular Ligament (CFL) means if he is able to make a final appearance at the All England Club, he will lack fitness and match practice.
