Andy Murray has announced he will miss the first two events of the claycourt season with the ankle injury suffered in Miami. But the three-time Grand Slam champion is “continuing to review options with his medical team” and is keeping alive his hopes of making his farewell appearance at Wimbledon.
The former world No.1 screamed in pain when suffered the injury during his third round defeat at the Miami Open on Sunday night. He completed his match – but then took to Instagram to reveal he has ruptured two ankle ligaments and admitted he would be out for “an extended period”.
The Scot would need months to recover from reconstructive surgery or could be back in weeks if the injury could be treated with rest and physio.
Murray has now seen a specialist in London and issued an update. It read: “Following consultation with his team and medical experts, Andy Murray has taken the decision to miss the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters and BMW Open Munich.
“At this stage, it is still not clear how long Andy will be out of action, and he is continuing to review options with his medical team. Obviously this is very disappointing news for Andy and he has reiterated his desire to get back on court as soon as possible. He thanks all his fans for their kind messages of support and will continue to update everybody as the situation evolves.”
Murray admitted earlier this month that he will “likely not play past this summer”.
Wimbledon starts on July 1 while the Paris Olympics – his alternative farewell where he could play in the doubles – begins on July 27. The double Olympic champion has already undergone two hip surgeries, including a hip replacement in 2019.
