The Democratic National Committee may have rolled out the big guns for its star-studded Radio City Music Hall fundraiser Thursday night, but an attorney for Lizzo’s accusers thinks it was politically incorrect.
As a matter of fact, Ron Zambrano — who represents three former dancers suing the Grammy Award winner for sexual harassment — described the whole affair as “a terrible look.”
“It’s shameful that Lizzo would be chosen to headline an event like this amid such egregious allegations,” he told NewsNation in an interview after the fundraiser that featured Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.
“Without getting into the politics, I can’t imagine why anyone would want Lizzo representing them in any way, given her reprehensible behavior,” Zambrano added. “It’s just a terrible look.”
With tickets sold for as low as $225, Thursday night’s sold-out Radio City event reportedly brought in a record-setting $26 million-plus in donations for Biden’s reelection campaign. Hollywood mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg, Vogue magazine editor Anna Wintour and Biden campaign finance chair Rufus Gifford orchestrated the benefit, which was attended by more than 5,000 attendees.
Lizzo was on hand as a featured performer alongside Queen Latifah, Ben Platt, Cynthia Erivo and Lea Michele. “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert moderated a discussion with the three Democratic presidents from the stage.
Three of Lizzo’s former backup dancers — Crystal Williams, Noelle Rodriguez and Arianna Davis — filed a sexual harassment lawsuit last August, accusing the singer, her production company and another employee of “creating a hostile, abusive work environment and making their working conditions intolerable.”
The 35-year-old “About Damn Time” singer denied “each and every” one of the allegations and announced her intent to countersue her accusers. Her legal team hit back that the dancers were terminated due to poor conduct.
In October, she filed a motion to dismiss the suit.
Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Marc H. Epstein ruled in February to toss several of the accusations — including one that Lizzo fat-shamed a dancer — but denied the singer’s motion to dismiss the entire suit.
Following the decision, Lizzo requested a jury trial.
