Young Thug’s attorney held in contempt, ordered to spend 10 weekends in jail

A lawyer representing rapper Young Thug in his ongoing racketeering trial was held in contempt after he accused the judge and prosecutors of improperly meeting with a key witness in the case.

Brian Steel, an Atlanta-based criminal attorney, was escorted from the courtroom on Monday after a heated confrontation with Judge Ural Glanville, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported. He approached the judge following an afternoon break, telling him a source provided details about a sit-down earlier in the day between Glanville, prosecutors and Keith  Copeland, an alleged associate of Young Thug.

Glanville repeatedly warned Steel he would face consequences if he did not reveal the name of his source before eventually holding him in contempt.

“You’re not supposed to have communication with a witness who’s been sworn,” Steel told the judge before calling for a mistrial, a request that was later denied.

Glanville pushed back, telling Steel there was nothing “improper” about the ex parte conversation in his chambers.

Copeland, who agreed to take the stand in exchange for immunity, spent the weekend in jail after he declined to testify on Friday. He seemingly reversed course however, and appeared in court on Monday, where he mostly evaded questions from the prosecution.

Steel was allowed to return to court about an hour after his exchange with the judge, but Glanville warned he would be arrested if did not reveal his source by the end of the day.

In an update shared Monday evening, Glanville revealed that he ordered Steel be taken into custody and held in the Fulton County Jail for “no more than 20 days for this contempt.” The lawyer will serve his time over the course of the next 10 weekends, from 7 p.m. on Friday to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Young Thug – whose legal name Jeffrey Williams – was arrested in 2022 on allegations that he served as the ringleader for the Atlanta gang YSL or Young Slime Life. He’s facing charges including criminal racketeering and gang charges.
