A woman’s burned body was found Wednesday in Highbridge Park behind a police precinct in Washington Heights — a “strange” death that was not believed to be a homicide, authorities and sources told The Daily News.
Around 4:37 p.m., police and firefighters responded to a brush fire inside the park near Manhattan’s 33rd precinct. After the fire was extinguished, the first responders made the grim discovery.
“It’s a woman, it appears there was an accelerant used,” an FDNY source said.
No arrests have been made as police continue to investigate.
“It’s strange. This is not a homicide,” a police source told the News.
A parkgoer, who did not want to give her name, said she smelled fire in the area around the time of the discovery.
“I smelled it coming over, it was really strong,” she said. “The firemen said it was a body that was found.”
“It’s crazy, there’s a lot of crazy people around.”
