William Tyrrell’s foster mother pleads not guilty to mysterious charge of lying to the top secret NSW Crime Commission

  • William Tyrrell’s foster mother in court for the first time over fresh charge
  • She is accused of lying to a secretive crime commission during investigation
  • The foster mother and father are both facing other charges not linked to William

William Tyrrell’s foster mother has pleaded not guilty to giving false or misleading information to the NSW Crime Commission over an unknown matter.

The 59-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was represented in Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday over the fresh charge.

She has maintained her innocence and will fight the charge when it returns to court in June. The maximum sentence for misleading the body is five years in prison.

The foster mother did not appear in court on Tuesday and suppression orders protecting her identity and specifics of the case were extended.

More than seven years after three-year-old William disappeared from his foster grandmother’s home in Kendall, on the NSW mid north coast, detectives set their sights on his foster parents.

His foster mother was named as a person of interest before being hit with a slew of unrelated charges, including stalking and intimidating a child who is not William.

The most recent charge was laid in February and relates to lying to the NSW Crime Commission. Further details of the alleged offence are not available to the public.

Her partner – William’s foster father – was also hit with one count of lying to the commission and intimidating a child.

The couple have been in and out of the courts for months now fighting to clear their names.

Court documents state the stalking charges for both parents are domestic related.

In November 2021, both foster parents were also charged in relation to the alleged assault of a child – again not William.

The foster mother was later hit with a second count of the first charge.

They have both pleaded not guilty, and indicated they may apply to have the matter heard under the Mental Health Act.

Documents obtained by Daily Mail Australia reveal the foster father was questioned at length by then-Tyrrell task force commander Gary Jubelin about a mystery phone which was live for nine months before being cut off.

‘It had a disconnection date of the 9/9/2014, so yeah just a couple of days before you went up,’ Mr Jubelin says to the foster father in a 2016 interview recorded at NSW Police headquarters at Parramatta.

Police allege the foster father ‘lied about something we can prove’ when interviewed by the secretive NSW Crime Commission in 2021.

He testified for up to two hours after being secretly summonsed to appear at the NSWCC Surry Hills headquarters on November 11.

Four days later, police launched a surprise ‘high intensity’ search of bushland around 800m from the house where William had been staying with his foster parents when he vanished seven years ago.

On the second day of the search for William’s remains at a dig site in the NSW Mid North Coast town of Kendall, the boy’s foster mother was declared a person of interest in his disappearance.

William Tyrrell had been placed with the couple in March 2012 as a foster child in the care of the then state minister for family and community services until he was 18 years old.

William was driven to the Kendall home of his foster grandmother on Friday, September 11, 2014 and was last seen playing on the verandah of the house on the Saturday morning.

A widespread search for him in the surrounding area failed to find any trace of him.
