Vladimir Putin issued dire warning as expert predicts he 'won't last' another term

Vladimir Putin faces an uncertain future as Russian President as the war in Ukraine “impoverishes” Russia, an expert has warned.

The war in Ukraine has been raging for two years now after Putin sent his troops into the country in February 2022.

Since then, Moscow’s economy has been on a war footing with 40 percent of the country’s budget being spent on the military.

Reports also claim Putin has burnt through much of Russia’s cash and foreign currency reserves after Western sanctions restricted Moscow’s ability to raise funds.

James Nixey, Russia director at Chatham House, now claims Vladimir Putin won’t be able to stay in power if this trend continues.

He told Times Radio: “He is 71 now, another term takes him to 77, then he is allowed to stand for another six years constitutionally. That term would then take him up to 83. That’s older than Biden is now.

“For what it is worth, I don’t think he can last that long, bearing in mind the state in which he has put Russia.

“He is bequeathing an awful legacy, not only morally, but also financially. He is impoverishing Russia with this war.

“When 40 percent of the federal budget is spent on defence and the government’s time and effort is going into this war, I don’t think he can sustain that for another 12 years. So we shouldn’t worry that much.

“That said, what comes after Putin is not necessarily, of course, a great deal better, although I would argue that perhaps a successor may not have quite the same sociopathic, ultra-nationalistic leanings.”

Russian elections were held last weekend, and Putin unsurprisingly won with 87 percent of the vote after opposition figures were stifled.

The only resistance came from supporters of Alexei Navalny, who staged Noon Against Putin demonstrations at polling stations.

Navalny was announced dead last month having been imprisoned on extremism charges. Western leaders have blamed Putin, saying the Kremlin ordered Navalny to be killed.

After his victory, Putin warned that the presence of Western troops in Ukraine will “lead the world to the brink of World War 3.”

Foreign Secretary David Cameron said after the election: “These Russian elections starkly underline the depth of repression under President Putin’s regime, which seeks to silence any opposition to his illegal war.

“Putin removes his political opponents, controls the media, and then crowns himself the winner. This is not democracy.”
