Viral TikTok videos promote common thing doctors say you shouldn’t do after brushing

Viral TikTok videos have sparked a new approach to teeth brushing that experts support.

The suggested method involves brushing with a fluoride toothpaste, spitting out the excess paste, and avoiding rinsing immediately after.

Dental professionals endorse this technique, advising to brush with fluoride toothpaste at least twice daily to prevent cavities.

Not rinsing after brushing helps the fluoride coating to remain on the teeth, offering additional protection.

According to Brittany Seymour, a spokesperson for the American Dental Association (ADA) and an associate professor at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, individuals who prefer to rinse after brushing can do so lightly with a small amount of water, such as a sip from the hand, or delay rinsing for approximately 20 minutes, reports Washington Post.

The formation of dental plaque involves acid-producing bacteria which, when combined with a diet high in sugar and inadequate oral hygiene, can lead to cavities.

Fluoride, a mineral, plays a crucial role in cavity prevention by safeguarding the teeth.

It primarily works by replenishing lost minerals in the protective enamel and minimizing the loss of minerals from the enamel.
