A MURDER on board a submarine and a shady crew has plunged viewers of new TV drama Vigil into murky waters.
Craig Burke, played by Martin Compston, protested about the lack of action taken when the vessel appeared to pull a trawler under the ocean.

He was found dead by his bunk after an apparent fatal heroin overdose – but DCI Amy Silva – actress Suranne Jones – quickly identified a cover-up.
Suranne leads the cast of the BBC show which comes from the same team behind Line Of Duty and Bodyguard.
DCI Silva has been faced with hostility as she tries to uncover the truth – and has a long list of suspects on her radar. Rod McPhee looks at the possible culprits.
- Vigil continues on BBC1 tomorrow at 9pm.
We look at the possible suspects in the death of Craig Burke[/caption]
THE second in command on HMS Vigil has admitted punching Burke, causing him to suffer injuries which he seemed to die of when he returned to his sleeping quarters.
Prentice clearly didn’t like Burke, describing him as “a treacherous little s**t, who got exactly what was coming to him” because he was sleeping with a woman in the nearby anti-Trident peace camp.

He admitted that he knew Burke’s rival Gary Walsh had planted the drugs in an attempt to make it look like Burke had died from an overdose.
But with another explanation for his death emerging, has Prentice told the whole truth?
CDR NEIL NEWSOME
HE seems one of the more upstanding members of the crew, but that could just be a red herring thrown to viewers by the writers.
Newsome, who initially dismissed any claim of murder, has barred DCI Silva from uttering the word.

He was also exposed by Prentice as being “a man of many, many failings.” Plus, he had the most reason to cover up the trawler being pulled into the sea which Burke could have exposed.
Killing him might be the ultimate means of ensuring his silence, but did he carry out the deed or order someone else to do it?
CPO ELLIOT GLOVER
SO far he’s done everything he can to help DCI Silva and claimed to get on well with the murder victim, but there is every chance Glover could be a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
He is perfectly placed to plant or remove evidence on the vessel, and as Vigil’s “walking HR department” has the confidence of everyone on board.

Glover also deals with discipline on the vessel so he would have been given responsibility for dealing with Burke after the troubled seaman exploded over the trawler sinking.
Maybe he dealt with it in the darkest way possible . . .
LT SIMON HADLOW
HE allegedly found Burke dead in his bunk – or did he kill him there? Either way he’s been acting very fishy, particularly when being questioned by DCI Silva.
Even when he was hauled in front of the commander to explain what he saw when Burke was attacked, Hadlow refused to say whether Prentice was the assailant.
LT Simon Hadlow, played by Connor Swindells, allegedly found Burke dead in his bunk but maybe he just killed him there[/caption]
A knowing look between Hadlow – a newcomer to the crew of Vigil – and Newsome suggests that the pair are in league together.
But he did let slip to the detective: “Nobody meant to kill him.”
WALSH is the most obvious candidate for killing Burke because he hated him.
The Chief Petty Officer blamed him for the death of his younger brother, Dougie, who had been honourably discharged and later killed himself.
Gary Walsh, played by Daniel Portman, is the most obvious candidate for killing Burke because he hated him[/caption]
It turned out that Burke had helped secure the discharge, and when he went to the wake they got into a fight alongside Hadlow.
DCI Silva also found a tin of sweets in his bunk which contained traces of heroin – the drug which he admitted he planted on his nemesis.
CHEF JACKIE HAMILTON
THE galley chef was the only member of crew on board who seemed to show any emotion following the death.
But could her crying be guilt rather than sadness?
Chef Jackie Hamilton, played by Anita Vettesse, could have easily slipped a toxin into his food as DCI Silva suspects Burke was poisoned[/caption]
After all, DCI Silva now suspects Burke was poisoned rather than being the victim of a head injury or overdose, and someone working in the kitchen could have easily slipped a toxin into his food.
Hamilton has yet to feature extensively in the drama, but we can expect to see more of her as the series develops and find out just how guilty or innocent she is.
MEDICAL OFFICER Lt TIFFANY DOCHERTY
IN Bodyguard, which was made by the same creators as Vigil, Anjli played the baddie, which means viewers might struggle not to see her as a villain in this show as well.
But that’s not the only reason she is a serious suspect. As the sub’s doctor and surgeon she has the knowledge that could allow her to easily kill someone and cover it up.
Lt Tiffany Docherty, played by Anjli Mohindra, gave Burke tablets an hour before he died, claiming they were paracetamol[/caption]
She also gave Burke tablets an hour before he died, claiming they were paracetamol, and said she did not spot the injury at the back of his head that seemed to cause his death.
