With pressure mounting, the 10th-ranked US play away from home against No 63 Honduras on Wednesday night.

‘Weston will return to Italy and will be unavailable for the match against Honduras due to a violation of team policy,’ Berhalter said in a statement.

‘There are high expectations for those who are a part of the US men´s national team, and in order to be successful it´s important that everyone in the group is accountable.’

Juventus are furious with Weston McKennie after breaching Covid rules on USA duty; he issued an apology on social media after missing the 1-1 draw with Canada

‘I am sorry for my actions. I will be cheering hard for the boys tonight and hope to be back with the team soon.’

A 23-year-old from Fort Lewis, Washington, McKennie missed Juventus’ derby against Torino in April after violating COVID-19 protocols in Italy.

The Italian club have still not forgiven McKennie for hosting a party during lockdown on the eve of that game – which saw team-mates Paulo Dybala and Arthur also in attendance – with strict curfews in effect in Turin. It seems increasingly likely that he will be sold in the January transfer window.

According to Tuttosport, Tottenham and Aston Villa would be ready to make an offer to Juventus – but the starting price is £25million.
