British tennis star Joe Salisbury beat his compatriot and rival Jamie Murray to the US Open men’s doubles title on Friday in a thrilling three-set final.

Britain was guaranteed a champion in the final, and Salisbury and his partner Rajeev Ram eventually powered their way past Murray and Bruno Soares, clinching the trophy with a 6-3 2-6 6-2 victory and adding to the Australian Open crown they won in 2020.

It was the first time two British men had faced each other in a grand slam men’s doubles final in the Open era.

The win secures Salisbury his third Grand Slam doubles title, while Murray will have to wait for the Australian Open to try and win his eighth.

Both pairs showed their respective class throughout the match, though Salisbury and American Ram recovered from a sluggish start to take the first set. Murray and Soares ensured it wasn’t all one-way traffic by winning the second set handsomely.

But Salisbury and Ram upped the serving game to take the final set away from Murray and Soares, who defended bravely but could not find a way to deal with their opponent’s rocket serving and powerful returns.
