United plane loses tire during take-off from Los Angeles

A United plane lost a tire during take-off Monday on a flight that departed Los Angeles and later landed in Denver without further incident.

The airline said no one was hurt when a tire from the main landing gear was lost during departure from Los Angeles International Airport around 7:16 a.m. local time. The flight continued safely to Denver International Airport and landed around 10:10 a.m. local time.

There were no injuries to the 179 passengers and seven crew members aboard the Boeing 757 plane.

“The wheel has been recovered in Los Angeles, and we are investigating what caused this event,” the airline said in a statement.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.

A similar incident occurred in March when an United flight took off from San Francisco International Airport. Several cars in an employee parking lot were crushed by the falling debris. That flight was safely diverted to Los Angeles.

Monday’s incident was the latest to befall the airline industry, which has come under increased scrutiny in the wake of a door plug on an Alaska Airlines plane blowing out mid-flight in January.
