Government statistics showed there have been 7,018,927 lab-confirmed cases of the deadly virus. A total of 133,274 people have died in the UK within 28 days of a positive test. The findings show some 988 Covid sufferers were taken into hospital on August 31, with 6,573 admissions in the past seven days, a 3.7 percent rise on the week before.

A further 41,192 cases of the disease were confirmed across the UK yesterday, and 45 deaths.

Some 21,795 people had their first vaccine dose on Sunday, taking the total to 48,270,113.

Meanwhile, a Government adviser has admitted the decision on whether to offer Covid jabs to healthy children aged 12 to 15 is “finely balanced”.

Professor Anthony Harnden, deputy chair of the Joint Committee onVaccination and Immunisation, said he understands parents could be left in an uncomfortable position if ministers decide to go ahead with a rollout.

He said: “It is very finely balanced. It’s marginally in favour of vaccination, but I do understand it from a parental viewpoint and I understand it from a teenager’s viewpoint.

“This is not an easy decision. There isn’t a right or wrong answer to this.”
