“That number is now 4,000 and although that is still about 400 more Covid patients than we had this same day a year ago.”

Sir Simon added the “sharp increase” in patients was due to declining community infection rates and the impact of the vaccine programme.

The Government has introduced five Covid alert levels, each reflecting different national infection levels, and level three is the third worst.
