In a statement on her social media today, Caroline Wilson claimed she will stand by her article where she warned of alleged bias against foreign media in China.
Ms Wilson, who was summoned to the European Affairs Department of China’s Foreign Ministry claimed she had only acted as her Chinese counterpart, Liu Xiaoming had done.
In a tweet, she said: “I stand by my article.
“No doubt the outgoing Chinese Ambassador to the UK stands by the 170+ pieces he was free to place in mainstream British media.”
After she commented that the media plays a critical role as a watchdog for the Government, Ms Wilson was rebuked by Chinese officials.
Following the release of the article, Chinese media accused the UK diplomat of revealing Western prejudices towards the state.
Indeed, last week Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin, criticised her comments and the use of fake news.
In the article, titled ‘Do foreign media hate China?’, Ms Wilson cited the ban on 13 US journalists fro the state.
