Tyson Fury’s fitness struggles have been laid bare after his dad John admitted he outpaced him on a run just a month before fighting Deontay Wilder.

Fury was knocked down twice but eventually knocked out Wilder in the 11th round of a captivating classic in Las Vegas on October 9, comprehensively deciding the duo’s rivalry in their trilogy clash after drawing the first and winning the second.

The Gypsy King, now WBC and The Ring heavyweight champion, remains undefeated in his 32 professional fights, with 31 wins and 22 knockouts.

But the 6’9′ Mancunian endured a tricky build-up to the fight. After contracting Covid-19, forcing the July match to be postponed, he stopped training again in August to spend time with his daughter.

Newborn Athena had to be revived by medical staff at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital shortly after being born, and Fury stayed by her side to pray for her recovery.

His father said: ‘I went to Alder Hey Hospital, I accompanied him just to keep him right. I said ‘look, you’ve got to do some form of exercise, just don’t sit in here. Let’s go for a bit of a run, you’ll feel better after it.

‘I’m 56 years old, 20 stone, I outran him. We went for a run round Liverpool and his lungs were on fire, I thought ‘look at this’. My lungs? You couldn’t hear them. He struggled with a three-mile run.

‘He said afterwards ‘that nearly killed me’, so that’s where he was at four weeks prior to that big night… Deep down inside I was worried because I thought ‘you know what, he shouldn’t be doing this’.’

Fury is expected to fight the winner of WBC mandatory challenger Dillian Whyte and Otto Wallin next, with a mouthwatering potential heavyweight unification bout against the winner of Oleksandr Usyk’s rematch with Anthony Joshua.
