'Trophy wife' Melania provokes vicious Twitter attack after praise from Baptist pastor

Pastor Stewart-Allen Clark resigned from a moderator position at an institutional summit after outraged Twitter users reacted to his sermon urging women to be “more like the epic trophy wife” Melania Trump. He made the remarks during a sermon at First General Baptist Church in Malden, Missouri, that was filmed and later shared on Facebook.

Mr Clark asked congregants: “Men want their wives to look good at home, and in public. Can I get an amen?”

He also compared “participation trophy” women to the former First Lady.

The pastor said: “I’m not saying every woman can be the epic, the epic trophy wife of all time, like Melania Trump. I’m not saying that at all.

“Most women can’t be trophy wives, but you know like her, maybe you’re a participation trophy.

“You don’t need to look like a butch either.”

The comments angered social media users who took to Twitter to denounce the pastor’s judgements, with one person saying: “Says the man hiding his pot belly in a t-shirt.”

Taking aim at the former First Lady, one user wrote: “Baptist pastor encourages Christian women to be more like Melania Trump.

“So they should, pose naked, marry for money, do soft-core, and plagiarise?”

A third commenter added: “Melania is a ‘fake beauty’ – her looks are superficial, and her words and deeds portray a dark soul.

“I prefer women whose beauty comes from within – from the kindness and generosity in their souls. Sometimes they have help, but often not.”

General Baptist Ministries has since publicly addressed the sermon, condemning Mr Clark’s viewpoint.

The institution also confirmed the pastor had “taken a leave of absence” and sought professional help.
