Trisha Goddard slaps down Piers Morgan in clash with GMB host: 'We decide what is racist!'

Trisha, 63, joined an esteemed panel on Monday’s edition of Good Morning Britain as Piers Morgan, 55, and the rest of the world reacted to the Oprah Winfrey interview in which the 67-year-old broadcaster spoke to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex about their lives as members of the Royal Family. In the candid chat, Meghan Markle, 38, discussed how she was asked questions by certain members of the monarchy who had concerns about her son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor’s mixed-race heritage. This launched a debate about racism on the ITV news show and the former Dancing on Ice star didn’t hold back in telling the host what she thought of his opinions.

The host asked: “We don’t know who the conversation was with or the context but what you’re saying is, any context in which that conversation happened is automatically racist?”

Trisha replied: “It only takes one straw to break the camel’s back and what gets me is why is everyone else such an expert about racism against black people?

“I’m sorry, Piers, but you don’t get to call out what is and isn’t racism against black people,” Trisha declared.

“You can call out all the other stuff, I’ll leave you to call out all the other stuff you want, but leave the racism stuff to us, ey?”

Responding, the journalist said: “When I think Meghan Markle calls the Royal family a racist institution, it’s a very serious allegation.”

Susanna Reid, 50, jumped in as she defended the expectant mother, telling her co-star: “She didn’t use that term.”

However, Piers was having none of it as he declared: “They portray the Royal family as racist and it’s a very incendiary charge.

“And I don’t think it’s fair to the Royal family to not name the supposed racists,” the outspoken presenter continued.

Taking to Twitter, viewers reacted to the clash between the pair as one wrote: “Trisha is right and GMB has been truly unwatchable today.”

“Piers has dismissed a woman’s mental health struggle and her experience of racism. The most truly disgusting TV broadcast by @ITV. Shame on all involved today,” they continued.

A second added: “Trisha is correct. It’s like when men tell women what’s sexist. Which is also why I never listen to white people speaking on behalf of black people’s grievances and feelings.

“I do think the whole mysterious story of Archie’s colour being an issue, sounds suspiciously false though,” they added.

Whilst a third commented: “Trisha you and @SholaMos1 made me cry this morning. Tears releasing frustration for the first time to see passionate women fighting on behalf of black women and all women to be heard with voices of strength and reason. Thank you. #BlackLivesMatter #InternationalWomensDay.”

Following a number of debates of Good Morning Britain on Monday morning, the full interview will air on ITV from 9pm.

Viewers in the UK will watch as both Meghan and Prince Harry, 36, speak candidly about their lives before stepping away from the Royal family last year.

Buckingham Palace has not yet responded to any of the claims made by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in their chat with Oprah.

Discussing this, Royal Correspondent Roya Nikkhah told Piers and Susanna: “They don’t want to rush anything out, any kind of response.”

“They want to take the time to consider the allegations but we have never heard anything like this in any previous Royal interview,” Roya continued.

“The things they have said and the picture they have painted of an institution, or family members is dynamite.

“Buckingham Palace is probably right to take their time and whatever statement comes out from this is going to be crucial in the narrative.

“They have said family members are racist, that Meghan was told she couldn’t leave the house, that she was ignored when she said she was suicidal – these are hugely disturbing claims.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV. CBS Presents Oprah with Meghan and Harry will air on ITV at 9pm tonight and on ITV Hub, Courtesy of Harpo Productions/CBS
