Health care workers walk out of a King Soopers Grocery store after a gunman opened fire on March 22, 2021, in Boulder, Colorado.

Multiple people were killed Monday, including a police officer, when a gunman opened fire at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado, the second mass shooting in the U.S. in a week.

Commander Kerry Yamaguchi of the Boulder Police Department said he did not know yet how many people were killed but said one was a member of the department. Yamaguchi also said a suspect has been arrested.

“There is no ongoing public threat,” Yamaguchi said in a 10-minute news conference. “We do have a person of interest in custody. That person was injured during the incident and is being treated for the injuries.”

Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty called the events “a tragedy and a nightmare” but shared few details, saying the investigation is just beginning.

No motive for the attack was presented at the press briefing.

The shooting comes six days after eight people – six of them women of Asian descent – were killed by a gunman at three spas in Atlanta and a nearby county.
