But things have changed ever since the Dimitar Berbatov saga of 2008.
That summer, United regularly talked up Berbatov. And Tottenham, at one point, looked set to sell the Bulgaria international to fierce rivals Manchester City instead.
However, United intervened and, after picking up Berbatov at Manchester Airport, convinced Tottenham into accepting a lower fee for their prized striker.
That rankled with Daniel Levy who, in the years since, has refused to sell a single player to United.
He denied Luka Modric a move to Old Trafford in 2011, instead choosing to sell him to La Liga giants Real Madrid the following year.
