Toto Wolff can lead Mercedes out of a rut as problems laid bare ahead of new regulations

Toto Wolff has no need to question his ability to lead Mercedes. The German acknowledged that his position should be scrutinised after scoring zero points at the Australian Grand Prix. But Wolff is dealing with a number of issues that are out of his control.

Star man Lewis Hamilton is half-checked out ahead of his move to Ferrari. The Brit insists he is fully committed but there will always be that thought lingering, waiting for 2024 to end.

George Russell is not yet ready to lead the team. He remains a qualifying specialist but is found lacking on race day.

On top of that, the car is not good enough to challenge at the front of the grid. But Wolff has proven he can crack regulation changes, as shown when Mercedes dominated from 2014.

Don’t count against him doing the same again when the 2026 regulations provoke another shake-up.

Murray doubles option

Doubles isn’t a bad option for Andy Murray to say his farewell if injury stops him from retiring with a final singles match.

Roger Federer closed the book on his career alongside Rafael Nadal at the Laver Cup.

And it would be great to see Murray bow out playing alongside another tennis great – like Emma Raducanu or Novak Djokovic.

Littler effect

RAYMOND VAN BARNEVALD needs to follow Luke Humphires’ example and try to protect darts’ young superstar.

The 56-year-old told Luke Littler, 17, to “f*** off” because he didn’t reply to his texts.

I bet he won’t be so bitter when his next paycheque is much higher because of the Littler effect.
