Tory MP speaks up after Labour demands inquiry into David Cameron amid Greensill scandal

Charles Walker MP, spoke on BBC newsnight in support of David Cameron and hailing the British media’s ability to hold politicians accountable. It comes after Labour leader Keir Starmer called for an inquiry to “get to the bottom” of Mr Cameron’s dealings with Australian banker Lex Greensill who allegedly profited from a Government-backed loan scheme.

Sir Walker said: “It would be ridiculous to suggest that a former Prime Minister can’t have a life after serving as Prime Minister or a life before serving as Prime Minister.

“I’m not an apologist for serving Prime Ministers but I do think in the case of David Cameron, he’s left office and he’s entitled to earn a living.”

The former Tory leader has recently faced scrutiny after he reportedly tried to persuade Government officials to grant emergency loans to Mr Greensill’s company, Greensill Capital, where Mr Cameron was employed after leaving office.

Greensill Capital was allegedly given access to departments while Mr Cameron was in No 10.

Sir Walker dodged the question when asked about the Government’s unwillingness to have public scrutiny and engage in internal investigations.

He did however hail the media as a force for change and as having the ability to hold the government accountable.

“I’m really pleased we have a free media and a media that likes to interrogate politicians, Prime Ministers and ministers,” said Sir Walker.

“The fact of the matter is we’re discussing this tonight, it’s been discussed in the newspapers, it’s been discussed on multiple news outlets, and as I think David Cameron used to say ‘sunshine is the best disinfectant’.”

“That’s why the Conservatives should agree to an urgent inquiry so we can get to the bottom of this latest scandal.”
