FEELING the chill as the weather starts to turn?

With energy prices soaring, it’s harder than ever to keep the cold out.

It’s harder than ever to keep the cold out so here are some top tips to keep that chill out[/caption]

But staying warm is important, especially for older people, so here are some savings ideas to help you stay toasty . . .

LAYER UP: Throwing on a jumper is an obvious solution, and you can maximise warmth by investing in thick throws to swaddle yourself in while watching TV.

You can pick up a Cosi Home heated throw, which is machine washable (the cord detaches), for £54.99 at amazon.co.uk. It’s a lot cheaper than the

Dreamland double electric heated mattress protector from Lakeland at £99.99.

Also, Primark sells a giant blanket hoodie, called The Snuddie, for just £14. It’s extremely warm and cosy.

SAVE: £45 with the Cosi Home throw.

TURN IT DOWN: Once you’re comfortably warm, research shows that lowering the thermostat by just one degree can save you up to ten per cent a year on your energy bill.

Turn that dial and you could see huge savings.

SAVE: £113 on average annual energy bills.

DRAW YOUR CURTAINS: Thermal curtains are a worthwhile investment as they could stop heat loss by 15 to 17 per cent, according to experts. Dunelm has a great range from £25.

However, there’s a hack to save you even more cash.

The Range sells thermal panels for £14.99, which can be hung over doors, further ensuring that heat doesn’t escape.

SAVE: £10.01.

DELETE DRAUGHTS: It can cost a fortune to have professional draught excluders fitted, but you can make a saving by making your own.

Look for cheap scrap fabric at charity shops or use an old pillowcase lengthways and stuff with old laddered tights.

Roll into a sausage and use at the base of your front door to keep the cold out.

SAVE: from £85 on professional draughtproofing.

LIGHT ’EM UP: The power of candles should not be sniffed at. If you have a few tealights dotted around the room it will create a warm, cosy feeling.

Instead of splashing out on a portable room heater — such as the £30 Beldray halogen heater from Argos — get a bumper pack of 100 candles from Ikea for £3.

Always practise fire safety with these, and blow them out before bed.

SAVE: £27.
